“German Rose” Belt

Our “German Rose” collection is gorgeous in an understated way. We have taken inspiration from history in order to create something that is still magnificent and striking, but also still subdued. With this whole collection, we’ve used mostly plain linen for the dresses, meaning it has a lot of lush, simple fabric to accentuate the wearer’s natural beauty. Instead of relying on fancy trim or embroidery, we have let the flattering shape and expert tailoring of the dress speak for itself. We thought that with the belt we should do something a little bit more ornate and bring in a few more textures, so that it can be a statement piece next to the otherwise quite plain dress.

The base for this belt is made from high quality leather which would look right at home at a luxury leather good store - it is rich in colour, but also very strong and will weather wonderfully. We have embossed the leather with latin phrasing "Fallaces sunt rerum species" that equates to “appears not what it seems to be”. This phrase implies that the wearer is perhaps a little bit more complicated, or has hidden talents that may not be obviously visible. We imagine that it alludes to sharp intelligence and cunning that our “German Rose” character hides with her innocent face. The font used on this belt is unique - it has been completely designed in house but has a medieval/ renaissance look it, like beautiful, neat calligraphy.

There are brass accents between the words, made from 1.5mm brass which has been laser cut in order to get a perfect, crisp shape. They look similar to little roses and are riveted onto the belt. This belt closes in the middle with a hook and chain, similar to other women’s belts found from the 14th-16th century. This allows for the belt to be a little bit adjustable, though if the measurements are too inaccurate, you risk the middle part of the chain hanging off centre and ruining the clean aesthetic.

The fittings at the middle of the belt are something new that we have created. They are robustly attached to the leather belt, and end with a rose shape in the middle that has been finished with pop of bright enamel. The colour really brings a little bit of luxury to this belt in a classy way. A chain extends from each of these round roses, one with a long chain and one with a hook. The hook is easily looped around the chain, with the remaining chain dangling down gracefully.
