This mail standard, sometimes referred to by modern enthusiasts as a “chainmail gorget”, was created with historical inspiration in mind. Commonly dated in the XV century, this excellent little piece of armor is a great addition to almost any kit and can be used in a variety of creative ways to add the finishing touch to a variety of costuming styles.

Constructed using the common 4:1 ring pattern, the rings of this mail standard are made from stainless steel, meaning you can fight hard and dance in the rain without any fear of your armor rusting. A tighter weave of 6:1 is used on the actual neck part of the standard, allowing extra protection and also bringing it closer to what would have actually been used in the XV century, as most historical examples also have the same pattern.

For the sake of comfort, the inside of this standard is lined with linen around the neck, to prevent the mail rings from rubbing against your bare skin where your gambeson or underclothes don’t cover. In order to make it extra fancy, we have also added a band of leather with beautiful scalloped edges, which truly makes this piece worthy of a knight. Leather thonging at the back of the standard allows it to lace up for the best fit, and the whole thing is held together with a robust leather strap stitched on and a medieval buckle.

While we can imagine this standard on a knightly character in full armor, we also know it will look great over a gambeson, in partnership with leather armor, or even as the finishing touch on a beautiful dress that just needs a little bit of added protection.
