Shoes are an overlooked aspect of costuming, usually, because people have to make a choice between cool-looking and comfortable. Old Norse shoes are notoriously bad when it comes to comfort and support, if not by the standards of ancient time, so they are often cast aside in favor of a pair of worn-in running shoes. What if we told you that you don’t have to make that choice anymore and that we’ve created a pair of shoes that look Viking but offer you the same comfort you would get from modern shoes?

Both medieval and modern shoemaking practices have been applied to these shoes to make sure they have the best construction possible. In order to make them fit more like your everyday runners, we have used modern shoe lasts to get the shape. We have also used a number of layers to create a comfortable base for your foot, which includes a porous orthopedic base, leather fibreboard, a leather insole, and a rubber outsole. This means that the inside is actually quite similar to a modern shoe, but the outside still has a flat Viking aesthetic with an inconspicuous bit of rubber to help with grip.

Genuine leather has been used for these shoes, which is strong but flexible and has a nice texture to it. This kind of leather takes embossing really well, so our patterns site deeply on it. The designs you see along the edges are inspired by Viking knot-work and art, but have been created by our team of in-house artists and are exclusive to ArmStreet. The shoes have been made with strong machine stitching, and have been lined with contrasting leather. A darker leather has been used the band around the middle of the shoe, which helps give it a good fit. This band is embossed with the same knotwork pattern and closes with beautiful dark ages inspired buckle.

Though these look more modern than your average medieval shoes, remember that leather needs a little bit of care! The easiest things you can do to prolong the life of your shoes is to let them dry before wearing them again, brush dirt and mud away from the seams, and store them somewhere where they won't be crushed by other shoes or boxes.

Important note about measurements:

Please be accurate taking measurements – this vastly influences our ability to make an item that will suit you perfectly. Also, you should remember that natural leather is soft material and it will stretch, so when you receive your shoes it is normal that it fits very slim. It will adjust to the shape of your feet after one or two days of usage.
