Her heart was like a rosebush, stems as hard as bone.
“German Rose” Chemise
Fine Linen Underdress with Pleats
Striking a balance between beauty and history, this dreamy chemise combines quality textiles with flawless tailoring techniques to give you the perfect underdress.
This chemise is a base layer of the German dress costume, meant to create a barrier between your outer clothes and your skin. This means that you have a soft, gentle layer of linen in contact with your body instead of scratchier overdresses. This layer also protects your clothing from sweat and is easily washed. The result is that you are more comfortable, and your clothes will be better preserved.
Inspired by 16th-century silhouettes, you’ll find this dress to be loose-fitting and comfy. We took inspiration from historical sources of women in bathhouses, which gives us insight into undergarments in the middle ages. It flows down to just below your knees, meaning it won’t interfere if you have to kneel or run. At the neck, all of the billowing fabric is gathered in and organised in a series of very neat little pleats that sit perfectly flat, with two lines of linen ribbon at the top and bottom, creating ties at the center. Though these pleats are perfectly functional, they end up looking decorative purely because of how masterfully they have been sewn!
The sleeves are roomy, giving you lots of space to move around and go about your daily duties. Just like the dress, they are voluminous and graceful, gathering in at the cuff in pleats that match the gorgeous ones around the neckline.
This style of chemise derives from the medieval German clothing and can be used with a variety of different time periods and is perfect for the SCA, Renaissance Faires, LARP, and other medieval subcultures. It also makes an excellent night dress, as the linen is nice and soft and breathable on a hot summer night.
We feel that this dress looks perfect with our “German Rose” Kirtle dress.
Please note that the maximum length of the chemise is about 130 cm (51 3/16 in).

This is my second chemise. My first has got lost an I was heartbroken. . This is beautiful and well made and looks lovely under my corset dress.
The details on this chemise are stunning! It isn't too tight on the wrist if you take the right size, but the laces are a bit slippery. I need to make a double knot so they won't loosen. The length is perfect for the corset dress as it seems a bit shorter and allows for comfortable movements.
Lovely chemise! Very light weight making it a great layering peice. I got the white linen and it looks lovely with my dark blue German rose dress, though I think this could easily be used with many other dresses. Can't wait to order more fun items. Thank you Armstreet!
Absolutely amazing thing! Looks and feels lovely with or without an overdress
Finally received my beautiful chemise today. Much delayed shipping to USA due to the Plague. Totally worth the wait. Exquisite details on neckline and sleeves. This is my third item of clothing from Armstreet. Will definitely be buying more.
Could you please tell me the (standard) length of the S (0-2) and the M (4-6)? I am trying to decide which size to get :) Thank you!
They are both 130 cm long.
Hello :) If I need a Small in this, can this be made the full 130cm length?
Hello, yes, of course. Please simply select custom size options and leave this request in the comments section to your order.
Is this available in a size bigger than 12?
Size 12 is the biggest one. However, we have our own size chart which might be confusing. Please send us your bust circumference in inches so we could select the right size for you.
I am interested in this chemise for easy breastfeeding access. Are the ties truly functional? How far down does the front split go?
Hi Natalie, this chemise is not suitable for breastfeeding, unfortunately. Please take a look at the Lady Rowena chemise that opens in front.
