Batiste chemise “Twilight Pumpkin”
Pleated cambric Renaissance underdress
Embroidered batiste chemise “Twilight Pumpkin”
Fine cambric Renaissance underdress with pleats
Our “Twilight Pumpkin” series balances between the historical references and modern Halloween aesthetics. Even the chemise garment you can barely see in a full costume has strong personality, highlights the main dress, and adds extra volume to the skirt. Never underestimate the base layer’s contribution to the final look!
However, back then, layering was a necessity, not just style – what was worn in the Renaissance under dress both protected the skin from the denser, coarser fabrics of outer garments and shielded those from sweat. An average historical chemise could also serve as a swimsuit or a nightgown. This chemise undergarment is decorated with beautiful handmade embroidery, though, so you’ll probably keep it for special occasions.
Inspired by 16th-century Renaissance undergarments, it is made from fine, soft cambric gathered in tiny pleats at the neckline and wrists. The chemise silhouette is loose-fitting and designed to poof out beneath the more slim-fit overdress. The sleeves are ample through the last third of the forearm, with pleated cuffs featuring ties and embroidery. Dozens of tiny, perfect pleats, neatly applied by expert seamstresses, create a finish that is both decorative and practical. They sit nice and flat and are reinforced at the top and bottom with a thin linen ribbon. Embroidery thread creates a pattern along the two ribbons at the neckline and those at the cuffs, adding contrast and really stepping the whole thing up a level.
