XIII-XIV Century Greathelm
A knightly stainless steel top helm
The glorious greathelm, the true pinnacle of knightly regalia! In literature, a greathelm is often depicted with glorious plumes and magnificent heraldic crests representative of the knight wearing it. These crests were secured to the flat top of the helmet and were made from leather, balsa wood, feathers, fabric, and any other materials that fit into the heraldry. It can be thought of as a piece of medieval advertising and branding for a knight, displaying their coat of arms and heraldic devices for all to see in jousts, knightly tournaments and ceremonial occasions. Think about it – in full armor, a knight’s face is not visible, so this is an excellent way to set you apart from the crowd and ensure onlookers know who you are. It was the greatest honor for a squire to carry their knights greathelm!
Historically, the great helm was not worn on its own. It was often the finishing touch after a knight was already wearing a close fitting bascinet, for the purpose for additional face protection as well as added height and visibility of their heraldic crest. They have been documented as being used in a time when the visored bascinet was not entirely common, meaning that without a great helm a knight would likely not have adequate face coverage. They were often removed in close combat to increase visibility and reduce bulk.
This greathelm will be a solid addition to your collection, as this piece of armor is functional, robust and reliable. Padded and ready for combat, it does up with a leather strap at your chin. Constructed from stainless steel, this helmet is rust resistant and will take minimal polishing and labor to stay lustrous and shiny – just ensure you give it a quick wipe down after it has been exposed to moisture. Solid rivets have been used in construction meaning it can take quite the beating and will last you for many melees in your future! It has narrow slots for your eyes as well as a strong but perforated front, adding a little bit more vision and also allowing for adequate air flow while you fight.
We have two options for surface finish for you to choose from. The mirror polish is your typical, super shiny finish that you can basically use as a mirror. It reflects light beautifully and truly makes you look like a knight in shining armor. For the less ostentatious we have a satin finish, which is much more matte and doesn’t have quite the same reflective surface. It is completely up to you which finish to go for – perhaps you should be asking yourself what kind of knight you want to be.

I asked ArmStreet to make this helmet with narrow eye slits, more breaths, and holes for a crest, and they did so perfectly! The helmet feels lightweight and very easy to see and breathe with. Much lighter than the bascinet I have and the sights are close to the eyes so the field lf view is great. I'm really happy with it!
A question is sent to Mexico and if it is the case the cost would be in dollars or Mexican pesos
Hi Eddy, yes we ship to Mexico. All prices on the website are shown in US dollars.
I don't see a mild steel option. Could this helmet be made with mild steel if I asked in the order, or is it stainless only?
Hi Jacob, sure, we can make it in mild steel for you. Please simple leave this request in the comment to your order and mention the required thickness of the steel.
I see you now offer 12 gauge SS for the helms. Are we able to request modifications (simple ones of course)
Hi Robert, yes modifications are possible. Kindly contact our support team with all the requirements to confirm them with our production team first.
hello! How much will this helmet weigh and cost if I order the 2.5 version of the helmet?
Hello, the helmet weights about 4 kg. No extra cost for 2.5 mm thick steel.
Please can we have a photo showing the padding and inside?
At the moment we cannot provide any photo showing the inside, sorry. The padding is the same as on our other helmets - example 1, example 2.
Excellent-looking helmet! I do have a question however regarding the head measurements. When filling in the blank asking for head size in inches/centimeters, do I need to measure my head with an arming cap and maille coif equipped? Or is it asking for my actual head size only?
Please enter the actual head size. You can add the measurement over the arming cap and maille coif in the comments to the order.
Do you guys make ACL/IMFC legal helmets?
Our helmets meet all armor requirements of the IMCF league and SCA heavy fighting.
But the steel that we use is too thin according to the ACL rules (they require at least 2.6 mm mild steel or 2.35 mm stainless steel, or 2.25 mm forgened steel). And we use mild steel of 2 mm and 2.5 mm, and stainless steel of 2 mm.
How much extra would it be to add padding and a chin strap?
Padding and chin strap are included.
I'm not eisaly impressed. . . but that's impressing me! :)
This model includes padding and chin strap.
