Polish Hussar Cuirass
Articulated stainless steel with brass accents
Eastern-style armour has been a passion of ours for decades. Even though we’ve mastered the art of Western knight armor, we’re always drawn back to our own culture and the history that built it. The Polish Hussars have long since been a topic for fascination for us: brutal mercenaries specializing in cavalry fighting, some known to wear fearsome wooden frames on their backs adorned with feathers to create intimidating wings... there is something truly awe-inspiring about a person who dresses in such a way. Our favorite part is that all of the armor is functional, but also undeniably beautiful, really capturing our imaginations. We are very excited to finally present you with a collection that captures the essence of these fearsome fighters.
The creative brief that we set for ourselves with this armor was for something that offers the maximum amount of protection but still having great flexibility so that the wearer can fight. We also wanted it to be opulent so that every single opponent you face becomes painfully aware of how rich and successful you are as a mercenary.
The main materials we have used on this cuirass are 1.5mm stainless steel, which is not prone to rust and will remain shiny and strong throughout its life. It also has great structural integrity, making it perfect for SCA heavy formats of combat and other reenactment-style fighting. The breastplate is well articulated with the help of sliding rivets at the side of the breastplate, which makes this one of our most flexible chest pieces yet! 1mm thick brass edging is used all around the breastplate to embellish it and bring that opulence that we talked about earlier. This has been etched and blackened in our workshop to bring a level of fine finishing and decoration to it. Additional round brass accents have also been added to the chest of the breastplate, and if you’ll look you’ll find fine details and finishes everywhere!
Even though the breastplate appears to have a brutal, jagged look to it, all of the edges have been well finished. Solid brass rivets have been used throughout, peened over washers at the back to ensure they are robust. Decorative washers have also been used on the front of the breastplate, which really takes it to the next level visually. Where leather is used, it is premium quality and strong. Instead of just using ordinary buckles, we have kept the whole thing cohesive and consistent with cast brass medieval buckles that add to the aesthetic.
We hope that you can already imagine yourself wearing this magnificent piece, storming enemy forces and looking amazing and intimidating while doing it! If you want more, take a look at our complete “Hussar” collection - you won’t be disappointed.
