“Olegg the Mercenary” Viking Splint Bracers
Basic stainless steel split bracers
“There is nothing quite so good as armor that fits easily in your bag,” Olegg told me once. He hastily produced his splint bracers, before rolling them back up and shoving them back in his bag just as quickly. “Olegg once had a full shirt of mail he would carry every day!” he continued, appearing to be proud of himself. “Bag weighed twice as much as Olegg! Big mistake”. Then again, I’m not sure how much trust you should put in a man who talks about themselves in the third person.
These nifty little bracers consist of 8 splints: 4 long and 4 short. Each of the long splints starts out at the wrist being 2cm wide, and flare out to 3cm at the elbow to accommodate the shape of your arm. The shorter splints are also 2cm at the wrist, and 2.5cm at the longest part. Each splint is 2mm thick and carefully cut to ensure no sharp areas or unfinished edges. For comfort, the wrist end of each bracer has been carefully bent out to ensure they don’t rub on your wrist bone and cause bruising, as is common in less well-designs renditions of this particular style.
Three strips of leather hold these bracers together. The leather is thick and robust, with the splints held to it with solid brass rivets and washers. Two of the leather straps end as straps to hold the armor to your arms, connecting to hand-cast brass buckles. Though these are basic bracers, we have still used our premium materials and careful craftsmanship. Solid stainless steel construction means that they will be much more resistant to rust than mild steel, and will remain beautiful and shiny. We recommend giving them a wipe with a dry cloth after a particularly sweaty fighting practice or a spar in the rain.
