Gothic Knight Arm Harness
Articulated XV century full arm protection
Very little even comes close to the functionality and beauty of medieval Gothic armor. This fantastic style of combat protection was originally found all over Europe in varying designs, but can be found all over the world in museums and historical displays. First made in the XV century, it is often associated with knightly figures and revered for its artistic style but also the flawless construction of articulated pieces, making it easy to move and fight in. Gothic armor is also very well known for its very particular aesthetic, specifically the folds and ripples you see in the metal, which is referred to as fluting.
Here at ArmStreet we LOVE Gothic armor. We think that it is beautiful and valiant, and are always working hard to improve upon our designs. Given this is supposed to be an easy, smooth style of armor to fight in, we also want to make it better and more comfortable. We officially consider this to be the third re-design of our Gothic armor, created by our master blacksmith after many, many hours of experimentation and wasted metal. Regardless of the sacrifices, we had to make to get to this point, we couldn’t be more proud of this magnificent suit of knightly cavalry armor.
The arm harness in this set is especially beautiful. It consists of three main parts, all riveted together: an upper cannon/rerebrace, elbow, and the bracer part. This provides you with full coverage from your wrist almost up to your armpit. The rerebrace begins with a beautiful piece of roping, an aesthetic motif that is carried throughout the rest of the armor. Instead of doing up with leather straps as much of our other armor does, it clicks together with the help of a simple push-pin mechanism, which looks very subtle and is barely noticeable at all, but very functional. The bottom of the rerebrace finishes on the inside of your elbow with a small articulated plate to allow you just a little bit more movement than we’ve offered in previous arm harnesses.
The elbow portion of this harness is fantastic! The fan is generous in size and flares out around on your elbow, going as far as to almost protecting your inner arm as well. It attaches to the bracer via two more articulated plates which ensure it’s easy to bend your arm. The bracer features attractive fluting as is full-wrap like the rerebrace, meaning it extends around your full forearm. This is anatomically shaped and is much less “tube-shaped” and more “human shaped” than a lot of bracers, which makes the whole harness extra desirable. Just like the rerebraces, they close with a push-pin mechanism, meaning there are no leather straps to get caught on anything and none of your skin exposed. The bracer is finished at the wrist with another little bit of roping.
Our Gothic Knight set is a premium set of armor, so we haven’t held back when it comes to quality construction and great materials. 1.5mm stainless steel is used (with 1mm stainless steel used on some smaller articulated parts), which is a very strong steel that holds up well to wear, tear and moisture. Natural leather is used for all points of articulation which is sure to stand the test of time. Solid brass rivets look fantastic next to the steel, and are peened over washers on the inside to provide a strong construction. Our “roping” is constructed from 3 stainless steel wires twisted together and welded on. Every last detail has been well thought through and designed!
Keep in mind that you have an option of two different surface finishes: satin or mirror polish. Satin polish is very lustrous and velvety and gives a subdued but still gorgeous finish to the armor. Mirror is more in the style of a knight in shining armor, with a reflective surface. Both look fantastic, it’s purely up to you what kind of look you’re going for!
Please note that we can also make this armor in mild steel, though we highly recommend stainless steel as it’s a much more hardy, rust-resistant material. If you have any additional questions about this armor, please contact us.
