Historical reference:

There were two types of sandals in Ancient Greece. First was made of hard leather or wooden sole with firm leather straps attached to the sole. Those with lacing above the middle of the leg were called cathurnus. And the higher rose lacing, the higher was its wearer's social position.
Apart from cathurnus there was another type of sandals. They were called 'baxa' or 'baxea' and were made of papyrus, willow leaves, twigs, or tree bark. This type was used to be worn by priests or philosophers.
Common Greeks usually were barefoot and only rich citizens and soldiers wore sandals. Footwear for women traditionally had more embroidering.
