Errant Squire Gorget and Pauldrons
Gorget with articulated pauldrons c.1460
Errant Squire Gorget and Pauldrons Set
A simple stainless steel gorget with articulated pauldrons c. 1460
There’s nothing a knight loves more than a trustworthy squire. Though he may be a daydreamer, the Errant Squire is still always quick to jump to attention and will drop anything to please his knight. Reliable, hard working and clever, the Errant Squire dreams of bigger things for himself, but also knows his place: right at his knight's side.
We created to Errant Squire Collection to provide an entry level set of armor that’s well crafted, historically based and constructed from quality materials. Just because someone is just starting out on their journey doesn’t mean they should wear inadequate armor! We designed this collection to last well, hold up in combat and hopefully one day be passed down to another squire. This gorget/ shoulder combination is made with 16ga (1.5mm) stainless steel on the big parts, and 18ga (1mm) stainless on any of the overlapping articulated plates. Stainless steel is the perfect material for a set like this because it’s durable, more difficult to dent that mild steel, and is much more rust resistant. You’ll no longer dread cleaning your armor after a sweaty practice session – a quick wipe down with a dry cloth should be enough to keep this armor shiny and beautiful. Though the Errant Squire Collection isn’t quite as fancy as our etched alternatives, we’ve still used the same amazing materials and careful crafting process. You’ll find the same premium brass rivets, sturdy leather straps and cast brass historical buckles that you see on our more expensive sets.
The pauldrons for this set are easily laced onto the gorget via holes at the top of the pauldron and sides of the gorget. One side of the gorget remains permanently closed via a hinge, while the other can easily be opened and closed with the help of a modern convenience – a locking pin. The locking pin is reinforced with the addition of another pin to make sure your gorget stays on in combat. This is probably the most comfortable, flexible gorget we’ve ever created – the neck piece is articulated with leather allowing you to look down and move without bumping your chin on the steel. The pauldrons are constructed with a variety of solid rivets and sliding rivets, meaning they’re brilliantly articulated and provide a vast range of motion. Instead of the common besegews, this piece is modelled after “tournament pauldrons” made by master Biagio for Givanni Spanzotti in Milan c. 1460. This means that the top of the pauldron is one complete piece, instead of the besegews being attached by leather or riveted on.
If you love this set but are looking for something a little bit more on the luxurious side, take a look at our “Paladin Collection”. It shares most of the same excellent design as this set but also has gorgeous etching that takes it to the next level of fancy.
