“The Wayward Knight” Visby Coat of Plates

This pair of plates is a part of our new “Wayward Knight” collection: a set of armor meant for a discerning fighter who loves the thrill of battle and also wants to look great at the same time. This Visby-style coat of plates is the armor you've been dreaming about. Flexible, protective and handsome, this piece is perfect for beginners and seasoned fighters alike. The original “Visby” coat-of-plates is a historical pattern, found in a mass peasant grave dated around 1361, but was thought to be designed even earlier. Visby’s are often thought to be the armor of the average man-at-arms, though you’ll see reenactors of many different social classes wearing them today.

We have changed the pattern slightly to make it more viable for modern fighting, by adding a back panel that gives protection to your upper back. This makes it ideal for SCA and other heavy formats of fighting where you want a little bit of extra coverage. Once the brigandine is on, the two side panels are tightened closed over the back panel to allow for a snug fit. This is different from our previous brigandine designs, and is much more comfortable and intuitive - which makes your squire’s job a bit easier!

The outside of this coat of plates is made from supple leather with a lovely finish, which is both hardy and beautiful. Inside, dozens of stainless steel plates are riveted in place to provide torso protection that is famously great at absorbing impact. This piece is significantly more flexible than a breastplate, but also offers even more protection due to how force is distributed across the smaller plates.

We’ve made this armor with careful attention to detail and constructed it from premium materials. The stainless steel construction of all of the plates means that you won’t find this piece rusting up on you after a sweaty fighter’s practice or battle. We’ve completed the whole piece with strong leather straps, beautiful brass rivets and quality brass buckles. All edges are well finished, giving the whole piece of armor a very polished, refined look despite being a piece meant for civilian soldiers.
