“Ragnvaldur the Traveller” Armour
Viking Inspired Leather LARP Armor Vest
“Ragnvaldur the Traveller” Viking Leather Vest
Viking inspired fantasy leather body armour for LARP
The Traveller knows how to survive. He knows how to stay warm but not overheat, and stay cool but not freeze. He dresses conservatively but intelligently, in a way that is both battle-ready but still casual. They prefer not to be burdened by the maintenance or weight of heavy plate armor or chainmail, instead they opt for the flexibility of leather and thin splint to defend their most vital areas. The Traveller knows no what or who they will encounter, or even where their journey will lead them, but they do know one thing: it will lead to tales to weave and stories to tell.
We designed this leather vest with lighter forms of combat, such as LARP in mind. It provides your torso with a decent amount of coverage while still remaining nice and flexible, and not restricting you nearly as much as a breastplate or heavy shirt of chain would. This vest hasn’t been inspired by any particular historical prototypes or patterns, and is the creation of our talented designers. We imagine it fits well into the “fantasy viking” aesthetic, which is very popular in less historical medieval subcultures!
There is absolutely no metal on this piece apart from the cast brass buckles, which close it up the center of the vest. It’s made of 100% leather, and is sewn together with leather thonging. We’ve constructed it to have two layers of leather: a top layer of squares, inspired by lamellar (though very different to traditional lamellar), and a bottom layer of solid leather. The squares are all hand sewn with leather thonging, and look fantastic! While we appreciate this historical touch, we also made use of a modern convenience: to make sure everything is extra strong, we used some glue to make sure everything stays in place in the heat of combat. Thonging securely attaches the vest at the back to shoulder straps, which are comfortable and come to a close with buckles at the front.
All of the buckles have been accented with viking knot work embossing, adding a little touch of beauty to this otherwise simple piece of kit. The leather we’ve made this out of is flexible but still very, very thick and robust, and holds the embossing very well. It has lacing at the sides and allows up to 10 cm (4'') size adjustment gap.
